Clueless Book Design

Inspired by the often disregarded genre of chick flicks, I envisioned what the iconic film "Clueless," a 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma" (1815), would look like if transformed into its original medium: a classical book. This project aimed to underscore how presentation shapes perception, while also highlighting the enduring impact of literature written by women. While the film's profound commentary on personal growth and compassion remains unchanged, presenting it in literary form invites a newfound level of respect from viewers. The redesigned cover pays tribute to the cult classic, incorporating yellow hues reminiscent of Cher's iconic plaid ensemble and an arrow piercing a heart, reminiscent of her fluffy pen. Symbolically, the two hearts represent the diverse forms of love depicted in the film. By maintaining a feminine aesthetic, this redesign embraces Cher's unapologetic love for girly things, challenges stereotypes, and advocates for greater recognition of chick flicks' cultural significance.
